Hurtigruten Arctic Highlights

To witness the Northern Lights was on our bucket list, so when we saw a UK package offer for a 3 night cruise and 1 night hotel in Norway including flights from London Gatwick, we booked the Arctic Highlights offer with Hurtigruten. This is our first experience of a cruise, and Hurtigruten are quick to point out that their Norway Coastal Routes are a scheduled ferry service, they are working vessels, which for us added to the attraction. If you’ve…

Husky Sledge Adventure & Snow Hotel, Kirkenes

We booked this excursion in advance on our Hurtigruten Arctic Highlight tour of Norway, it’s a good job as it was sold out with a waiting list on arrival at the ship. Having chatted with a Hurtigruten representative prior to departure, I was convinced that this was the best excursion of our trip, and was looking forward to the experience of sledging with husky dogs and a chance to explore the coolest hotel in the world. This excursion is available…

Guayadeque, Gran Canaria

I was absolutely fascinated by the valley of Guayadeque. Guayadeque is a ravine or barranco as they’re called in Spanish, situated between the towns of Agüimes and Ingenio. What’s special about this particular place is the variety of cave dwellings along the route, which have been transformed into houses and restaurants. Sadly on this occasion, we didn’t spend any time out of the car, as it was only the second point of interest along our rural tour of Gran Canaria.…

La Villa de Aguimes, Gran Canaria

Agüimes is a beautiful traditional example of a municipal town in the Canary Islands, and only a short drive from Gran Canaria’s airport. The parish church of San Sebastian is an obvious landmark to aim for when approaching the town of Agüimes, the historic centre was clearly signposted and we found a parking space easily. The Parroquial de San Sebastían was built in three phases, the first of which started in 1796 and the third ended in 1940. Gothic, Neo-Classical…

Cafe Restaurant Argana, Marrakech

Café Argana is a landmark building in the famous Place Jemaa el-Fna, it stands proud overlooking the busy square and is the best place to have a table view. Sadly this café had to be rebuilt after a bomb attack in 2011, which explains it’s modern facilities and high security. Having tried the street food stalls on our first evening, I wanted something special for my birthday meal on our second night. We made a reservation for a front table…

Bientang’s Cave, Hermanus

We drove through the spectacular Franschhoek pass to drop down to the Indian Ocean coast and town of Hermanus. Walker Bay is one of the top 12 places in the world to observe whales, this huge bay has been declared as a whale sanctuary and stretches from Hermanus to Gansbaai. We parked on the cliffs and wandered along the footpath, searching the surface of the sea for any sign of whale activity. June is early in the season and sadly…
