Where is it?

The United States Grand Prix takes place at the Circuit of The Americas, usually shortened to COTA, on the outskirts of Austin, Texas. The purpose-built venue first hosted Formula 1 in 2012.

Austin is a city with plenty of personality, famous for its live music, great food and lively nightlife. It’s a fabulous place to spend a few extra days either side of the racing.

What’s the circuit like?

COTA is just over 5.5KM long, with 20 corners and a mixture of fast, flowing sections and slower, technical turns.

Its signature feature is the steep climb to Turn 1, where a wide entry funnels the cars into a tight left-hander. Watching the whole field charge uphill at the start is quite a sight.

The opening sector includes rapid changes of direction inspired by Silverstone’s famous Maggotts and Becketts sequence. Further round, the long straight between Turns 11 and 12 gives drivers a chance to line up a pass before the heavy braking zone.

What sort of race can we expect?

There’s plenty here to keep drivers busy. The fast corners reward commitment, while the slower sections create opportunities for close racing. Turn 1 and the end of the back straight are places to watch for drivers trying a move.

Austin has already given us some memorable moments. Lewis Hamilton secured his third world championship here in 2015, winning an incident-filled race ahead of Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel.

In 2018, Kimi Räikkönen ended a wait of more than five years for a victory, holding off Max Verstappen and Hamilton to take a hugely popular win for Ferrari.

Why go to this one?

This is a great choice if you enjoy combining your racing with evenings out. Spend some time exploring South Congress, with its independent shops, restaurants and live music venues, then settle in somewhere for a drink and a band.

Make time for the food too. Barbecue and tacos deserve a place on your Austin itinerary, and there’s no shortage of places to try them.

You could also make the Grand Prix part of a longer American holiday. Ask us about adding a Texas road trip or combining Austin with another destination.

Where’s the best place to watch?

Turn 1 would be high on our list for the start and the uphill braking zone. For close racing through several corners, consider the stadium section around Turn 15.

The main grandstand is another good option if you enjoy the grid build-up, pit stops and finish-line celebrations. Check the final 2027 seating plan and ticket inclusions before choosing your seats.

When is it in 2027?

22–24 October 2027, with the Grand Prix on Sunday 24 October.
