Arctic Highlights Expedition With Hurtigruten

We’ve booked our next adventure, this time we’re off to colder climes on a cruise expedition to discover the Arctic in December. The Northern Lights were definitely on our travel bucket list, so when an opportunity arose to take a 4 day cruise along the coast of Norway and spend a night in Tromsø “The capital of the Arctic”, where we are likely to encouter the fabulous Aurora Borealis, we didn’t hesitate. We are travelling with Hurtigruten, who are an…

Den Anker, Cape Town

For our first dinner in Cape Town we both wanted to eat early and fancied seafood. After getting wet exploring the V&A Waterfront in the rain, we took shelter inside the Belgian speciality restaurant, Den Anker, which was conveniently on the quayside only a stone’s throw from our hotel. We didn’t have a reservation and the restaurant had a busy evening ahead of them, thankfully they took pity on us and offered us a table next to the fireplace. Having…

Boulders Beach Penguin Sanctuary

The African penguins that can be found on Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town, are a popular attraction for visitors to South Africa. The Boulders Penguin Colony was founded when a pair of African penguins were spotted on Boulders Beach in 1983, today there are around 1000 breeding pairs in residence at this sanctuary. These penguins were commonly referred to as “jackass penguins” due to the braying noise they make. The African Penguin has been registered as an endangered species since…

Flying Qatar Airways to Cape Town

We had been planning a trip to Cape Town for some time, and once we knew the overall plan, we got to the airline decision. I’d wanted to fly Qatar for ages – they’ve built up a great reputation, won many awards and call themselves “The five star” airline. Qatar are relatively new to the international scene, but they have a super modern fleet and they use the incredible new airport at Doha as a hub – you fly there,…

Bukhara & Haiku, Cape Town

We had originally set out to find a good meat restaurant within walking distance of our hotel for our second evening in Cape Town. However, when we spotted Bukhara with their Indian and Asian menu combination, we decided the chance of a good curry was too good to ignore. Bukhara’s concept was to set a new standard for Indian cuisine in South Africa, their large restaurant at the V&A Waterfront oozes opulence with three large dining rooms overlooking the harbour.…

Our next travel adventure is Cape Town

A few weeks ago we were discussing where we should travel to in October/November for our next adventure, we wanted it to be a long haul destination and batted around a few ideas, including Thailand, Far East & South Africa. I wanted Mike to influence this trip as Morocco had been something I’d wanted to do for years. We finally settled on South Africa and decided that we would go in November, straight after the World Travel Market in London…

Countdown to Hong Kong

Mike was born there, he left when he was 13 years old, so I’m fascinated to see what he remembers by visiting the family’s old haunts and what has changed over the decades since they moved to the UK. March is also the 20th anniversary of when we first met and Mike’s birthday, so it’s going to be a very special week for the two of us. At the moment we’re working in excess of 80 hours a week booking…
