Melbourne is the capital of Victoria, Australia’s smallest state situated at the southern tip of the east coast. Trams are free in the city centre, the City Circle tram is a great way to get around. There’s still evidence of the Victorian gold rush with 19th century architecture in Melbourne. Federation Square is the cultural hub for events. For shopping the Queen Victoria Market is popular, and for a city view visit Eureka Skydeck 88 or one of the trendy rooftop bars.

Further afield you can……

The bohemian suburb of Fitzroy is a draw at the weekend for the Rose Street market. You can also find an eclectic mix of shops, bars & restaurants on Brunswick Street, Gertrude Street & Smith Street.

Take the tram to St Kilda beach to see Victoria’s famous penguins. The St Kilda Esplanade Market on Sunday is popular. You can walk, ride or skate with the locals along the waterfront.

Drive the Great Ocean Road spanning 151 miles with stunning scenery of lush landscapes and rain forest on one side, cliffs and beaches on the other.

Walk the 65 mile Great Ocean Walk from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles where you can find wild koalas, kangaroos and echidnas.

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland. Brisbane has a relaxed urban outdoor lifestyle. Visit South Bank on Brisbane’s river for lush parkland and world class eateries. You can also find Australia’s largest gallery of modern art and the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre in this location.

Further afield you can……

Visit the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary which is 1 hour from the city, where you can feed kangaroos and cuddle a koala.

Take a ferry to Moreton Bay for activities including a quad bike tour, sandboarding and feeding dolphins.

Visit the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha, entrance is free and only a 15 minute drive from the centre.

Perth is the capital and largest city in the Australian state of Western Australia. Perth has a free CAT bus service which is very handy to explore the city. Kings Park is larger than NYC’s Central Park and offers views of the Swan River and city skyline. Choose from 1 of 19 beaches around the city to chill out on, Cottersloe Beach is famous for watching the sunset.

Further afield you can….

The Swan Valley wine region is a 30 minute drive away, where you can experience The Swan Valley Food & Wine Trail to taste fresh produce, visit wineries and microbreweries.

Swim with wild dolphins at the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park (Rockingham) or Koombana Bay (Bunbury).

Visit the 19th century port town of Freemantle, for history & markets.

Meet a Quokka on Rottnest Island by taking a ferry from Fremantle, Perth or Hillarys.

Sydney is a vibrant city in New South Wales with iconic architecture such as the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Home to the famous surfing beaches of Bondi and Manly. Water taxis, ferries and seaplanes help to access attractions in Massive Darling Harbour and the smaller Circular Quay. Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, known locally as the coat hanger, or visit the Skywalk for great views of the city. For shopping head to the Queen Victoria Building, Pitt Street Mall, Westfield Sydney or Strand Arcade. The cobbled lanes of The Rocks have some interesting places for food and drink, as well as the Sydney Fish Market.

Walk the 6km Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk.

Explore the city suburbs, Paddington has a famous market on Saturday, Darlinghurst & Surrey Hills are lively neighbourhoods with trendy cafés & bars. For vintage stores visit Glebe, Newtown, Balmain & Rozelle.

Take a ferry to Manly from the Circular Quay for great surf beaches or to walk / ride the Spit Bridge Scenic Walkway.

Drive out to the Blue Mountains 1.5 hours from Sydney where you can take ride the Scenic Railway in glass topped carriages, or visit the Jenolan Caves. There’s also more opportunities to indulge in tasting local food, wine and artisan shopping on route.
