Cairns was the 5th destination on our Australia trip. Unfortunately the seriousness of the Coronavirus pandemic was becoming evident. We spent much of our time working through the night (due to the timezone difference) to help our affected clients with lockdowns and travel restrictions.

A visit to Kuranda was the highlight of our time in Cairns. We had booked the Kuranda Scenic Railway out, a visit to Rainforestation and the Skyrail back.

We postponed our plans to visit the Great Barrier Reef.

When we arrived, Cairns hadn’t had a case of Coronavirus, which they attributed to their tropical climate being too warm for the virus. That week though a tourist who had recently arrived brought them their first case. The destination was very quiet, so social distancing wasn’t an issue. The Esplanade lagoon was still open for swimming. It’s a lovely waterfront area, with lots of birdlife, information boards, public BBQ’s and picnic tables.

From Cairns we travelled to Brisbane, where we quickly realised it was time to cut our trip short and head home to lockdown. Australia remains unfinished business for us – we’ll be back.
