UK Government – Review of licensing laws at airports
With the number or drunk and disorderly airline passengers rising, the UK government has called for evidence about the impacts of pre-flight drinking. They are interested to know if licensing laws were introduced at airports would this reduce the amount of drunk and disruptive passengers. Measures could also be taken for duty free purchases to be carried in sealed bags, to prevent the consumption of these drinks whilst on flights.
London Gatwick Airport – Strike Action
Members of the Unite union have voted in favour of staging three 48 hour strikes during November and December in relation to a dispute about the inequality of pay at Gatwick airport.
Planned strike dates include:
5am 20th to 5am 22nd November 2018
5am 26th to 5am 28th November 2018
5am 21st to 5am 23rd December 2018
The dispute is focussed on the significant difference in pay from airport staff who organise the luggage trollies, to those that help assist disabled passengers.
NH Hesperia Hotels – rebranded under new AMResorts Alliance
Two Hesperia hotels in Lanzarote, and one in Fuerteventura have been terminated from the management agreement with NH, they will be rebranded under AMResorts. Grupo Inversor Hesperia (GIHSA) have a new collaboration with Apple Leisure Group (ALG), the $20 million rebranding investment will take effect from May 2019.
Secrets Resorts & Spas brand are adult only hotels, whereas Dreams Resorts & Spas and Amigo Resorts are family friendly properties.
Currently the hotels are known as Hesperia Lanzarote, Hesperia Playa Dorada and Hesperia Bristol Playa.
Secrets Lanzarote Resort & Spa and Amigo Fuerteventura Resort are due to start from May 2019. Dreams Lanzarote Resort & Spa will debut as a 5* property in November 2019.
The hotels will continue to offer bed & breakfast, half board and all inclusive accommodation, rather than the traditional all inclusive rates normally associated with AMResorts.
Norwegian – Pulls Oakland & Fort Lauderdale flights in favour of San Francisco & Miami
From the 31st March 2019, Norwegian will launch routes to San Francisco and Miami from London Gatwick as part of their summer 2019 schedule. The airline is replacing flights to Oakland and Fort Lauderdale with 5 flights a week to San Francisco and a daily service to Miami. Lead in prices start from £174.90 one way. Other amendments include reducing Los Angeles to 1 flight a day and Chicago to 4 flights per week.
TUI – Tops the list of worst airlines for flight compensation payments
Bott and Co, the UK flight delay compensation law firm have announced the worst offenders for dragging out compensation payments, according to their data. TUI Airways was the worst offender and most likely only to pay out in 70% of cases, when court proceedings are issued. easyJet was the second worst offender with 45% of passengers having to issue court proceedings before any pay out. On the opposite end of the scale, Jet2 settle 91% of cases before court, followed by British Airways with 90% and Thomas Cook at 89%.
