Top 5 things to do in Lanzarote: Timanfaya National Park

If you can only visit one of the attractions, it should be the Montañas del Fuego / Fire Mountains in Lanzarote. A series of almost constant enormous volcanic eruptions between 1730 and 1736 created Timanfaya National Park and the Lanzarote’s dry climate means that the landscape has hardly changed since.  The coach ride that carefully snakes its way around the park should not be missed. Visitors need to make sure that they have their cameras ready, because the views are out of this world!  Although classed as dormant, the lava ash stone particles under foot are warm. Visitors are able to witness the heat below ground through demonstrations, straw ignites as it is thrown into a shallow pit and a steam geyser gushes out of the ground after water is poured into a hole.  The El Diablo restaurant cleverly utilises the geothermal heat for cooking it’s guests food on a giant barbecue.

Top 5 things to do in Lanzarote: The César Manrique Foundation

César Manrique was an artist born in Lanzarote, and helped to develop the island for tourism, without losing the traditional charm. It’s no surprise that he designed a spectacular house known as the Taro de Tahiche which was constructed to incorporate underground volcanic bubbles in 1968. The artist lived there until 1992 when he moved to Haria and the non profit Fundación César Manrique was founded.

Over 300,000 people visit this unique property each year, visitors are astonished by the incredible architecture and the genius way that nature and art were combined, to create this spectacular property which is situated in the middle of a lava field.

Top 5 things to do in Lanzarote: Jameos del Agua

Visitors describe the atmosphere in this stunning natural underground lake as magical.  A 7km volcanic tunnel was formed by the eruption of the Volcan de la Corona in the north of Lanzarote. Two visitor attractions have been created from this lava tube, the Cueva de los Verdes and the Jameos del Agua.

The Jameos de Agua is part of the Monumento Natural del Malpais de la Corona which makes it a protected site of scientific interest.  It is home to a blind, albino cave crab endemic to Lanzarote. This venue has been planted with stunning greenery which contrast beautifully with the black lava rock and white washed floors.  There is a fabulous restaurant, bar and even an auditorium in a cave which seats 550 people and has outstanding acoustics. Visit in the day for a tour, or book a table for a dinner and concert in an evening. There’s also the Jameos Festival late night music events with DJ’s in the summer.

Top 5 things to do in Lanzarote: Mirador del Rio

Mirador del Rio is not just any viewpoint!  This raised view which is 500 meters above sea level offers the most spectacular views of the sea and the island of Graciosa .  In fact on a clear day you can see the other islands of Montaña Clara, Alegranza, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste which together with La Graciosa completes the Parque Natural Archipiélago Chinijo.

Visitors can enjoy this view from an outside balcony or from behind the huge panes of glass in the visitor centre.  Telescopes are available on the balcony which allow visitors to be able to zoom in on the islands.  There is a souvenir shop and cafe at Mirador del Rio, so grab a drink and enjoy what we consider to be the best view on the island.

Top 5 things to do in Lanzarote: Playas de Papagayo

The natural beaches of Papagayo are truly idyllic. Made up of a series of coves and beaches, this spot is the perfect find for visitors seeking golden sand and warm, calm waters.  The crystal clear, still waters are a haven for families who love to paddle and those who enjoy snorkeling.  Visitors describe these beaches as being the most beautiful in Lanzarote, which is quite a statement when you consider that there are over 100 beaches on the island!  The high cliffs offer shelter from the wind and whilst some can get busy, they still provide a real intimate feel.  This protected area is truly stunning and an absolute must for all beach lovers visiting Lanzarote. There are several boat trips with excursions to Papagayo if you are not staying in in the holiday resort of Playa Blanca.
