The 5* La Isla y El Mar boutique hotel in Lanzarote is a bubble of sanctuary to found in the old town area of Puerto del Carmen. This modern suite hotel which opened in early 2015 was designed with a zero carbon footprint, so not only is it tranquil, this accommodation is environmentally friendly too.

We first visited this hotel in 2014 during construction and met with architect José María Pérez Sanchéz. He was responsible for creating the fabulous La Isla y El Mar hotel from the dated Balcón del Mar property, which originally occupied this position.

This boutique hotel has upgraded from 4* to 5* since opening, the most recent change is to become adults only from May 2020.

Our Experience

Our latest stay was in January 2020, we booked a classic suite and was allocated 705. Situated just below the pool area, our room was conveniently located and had a wonderful view to Fuerteventura & Los Ajaches. We benefitted from sunshine on our terrace for most of the day, this was furnished with two chairs, a coffee table and two sun loungers.

On arrival guests are welcomed with a hot towel and glass of cava, whilst the formalities are completed. The guy who took our bags and showed us to our room was very informative. Explaining that the soft drinks in the fridge are complimentary, any restocked or additional drinks ordered are payable on room service. Making sure we knew how to us the coffee machine provided with pods, and kettle with tea bags. A complimentary bottle of water is provided each day. Additionally there is a television in the bedroom and lounge. Toiletries are provided, as are pool towels which can be refreshed daily.

Comfortable sun loungers around the pool and terrace with a call device for waiter service, efficiently delivered by Ruben. Low volume chill out music is played, just loud enough to hear without disturbing the relaxed atmosphere.

Breakfast buffet included an interesting Mediterranean section, as well as the usual cold meat & cheese continental selection, fresh fruit, dairy produce, fresh bread & bakery goods and cooked breakfast with an egg chef on hand for personal orders.

During our check in we were given an invitation to a glass of cava in Kentia. Plus a free bottle of Bermejo wine from Lanzarote, with the tasting menu at Kentia.

Personally we love the design and ethics employed by the owners, Grupo Martínez Hermanos. La Isla y El Mar stands out for all the right reasons:

  • Only Canarian companies were contracted for the build, 80% of them based in Lanzarote
  • Geothermal energy investment to attain a zero carbon footprint
  • Modern design combining stainless steel sunshades to reflect our amazing daylight with grey lava stone, opposed to the usual white wash
