All of the 41 rooms have sea views. Suites (55m2) are situated on the ground floor, and twin rooms (40m2) on the first floor. Additionally there are 4 two bedroom two storey villas (120m2) with private pools.

Board options include breakfast or half board. CALALANZAROTE is an adults only hotel from 16+ years old. The atmosphere is quiet for a relaxed chill out. You won’t find pool activities or entertainment in this location.

The 20 ground floor suites have 3 steps between the bedroom and living space. There is a separate toilet from the shower room. The design is stark / minimalist which provides plenty of uncluttered space for guests. These rooms have a warmer tone, with wooden flooring, yellow bedding and blue sinks. Terraces face the pool with sea views.

The 21 twin rooms accessed by stairs or lift have cooler tones, with grey flooring, sinks and furnishing. Two rows of twin rooms benefit from pool & sea views from the balcony. Whilst the other row faces out to the stunning seascape of Papagayo. The balconies of the rooms above the restaurant, almost give the impression of being on a cruise ship.

All rooms have air conditioning, wifi, bathrobes, eco friendly toiletries, Nespresso coffee machine (replacement pods chargeable), safe and stocked minibar as standard. The large flat screen TV’s have channels for Spanish, English and German programmes. The hotel has a free gym with cardio machines, and a small spa is available at an extra charge.

Suite terrace with sun loungers versus twin room balcony with deck chairs

The suites are furnished with sun loungers on the terrace, where as the twin rooms have deck chairs on the balcony.

La Cala Suites Restaurant

At CALALANZAROTE, the restaurant has panoramic views facing out to the natural beaches of Papagayo. There is a terrace for al fresco dining by a water feature. Breakfast is a buffet service, plus dishes on request. Daytime snacks are served from the Pool Bar. The evening is an à la carte dinner service.

This hotel is situated on the promenade close to Marina Rubicón, providing a selection of shops, bars and restaurants within a short walk. The Castillo de Las Coloradas or Torre del Águila is a focal point from the pool area, with Fuerteventura as the backdrop.

Additionally to the 41 suites, there are 4 x two bedroom villas (120m2). These are duplex style over two floors linked by stairs and have a private pool, with a bedroom and bathroom on each floor, plus a living room on the ground floor. Three of the villas (no’s 2-4) look onto the promenade and Papagayo, whilst villa 1 is a bit more private but not as picturesque views on the other side of the hotel by the main pool.

Our Experience

We stayed at La Cala Suites in January 2022.

The hotel is still very much as it was when we visited when it first opened. We stayed in a double room sea view (204) which is in the middle of the row facing out to the Castillo del Aguila / de las Colorades & Fuerteventura over the pool. If taking the lift this is floor 1, and up one flight of stairs from the ground floor. We had a thick calima during our stay, so the view was a little obscured.

The room is spacious and sparsely furnished, we liked the grey tone and warm wood combination. On arrival there were 2 bottles of water, 6 coffee pods (2 of 3 varieties) for the Nespresso, an empty fridge and a kettle but no tea bags (fortunately I travel with a selection of my favourites). The water or coffee pods were not replaced during our stay. The large TV is situated directly opposite the bed, rather than in front of the sofa, it’s not wall mounted. There was a choice of 7 television channels, all bar 2 were German language, for English language we had a choice of Bloomberg Europe or CNN. The remote offered a Netflix option but we weren’t able to access it to connect our account. WiFi was easy to connect and remembered the log in throughout our stay. The bathroom is split into two sections, the toilet is in a separate cubicle with a third sink, mirror and hairdryer – the sliding door doesn’t have a handle so you have to flat palm the door to grip and open / close. The shower area isn’t private, so not an ideal set up if you are sharing with a friend / family member rather than spouse / partner. If the other guest stayed in the living area they couldn’t see in, but should they walk the length of the room the clear glass screen offers no privacy. That said, it’s a wonderful space if you like to share a shower! There are two shower heads, a large one overhead and a hand held on a flexible hose. There are twin sinks with hand and bath towels, dressing gowns and eco toiletries. The sink area has liquid soap and body lotion. The shower area has body & hair soap and hair conditioner. The third sink has a bar of soap. The mini fridge was limiting for storage as the shelves could not be removed to accommodate a larger bottle of water, so buy mini ones! We really liked the staggered balconies, so although they are not private from the pool area due to the glass wall, you are private from your immediate neighbours. They are also a good size, with room for 2 deck chairs and a round table with 2 chairs.

During our stay the two exterior gates on the far side of the hotel, closest to the marina, were not in use, which meant walking out of reception and around the front of the hotel to head towards Marina Rubicón. Reception explained that it was due to the Covid situation as no visitors were allowed at the time and they can monitor this from reception (we had to show our vaccination certificate at check in). The small Spa is situated down a floor by the Pool Bar, there was a small indoor pool with sun beds during our visit but no-one on reception when we went to have a look. The gym is also in this area with a couple of seating areas and a book exchange. The cardio section has 2 bikes, 2 step machines and 2 running machines, plus some free weights and benches.

There are 2 areas of the hotel still to be developed. It’s a shame the roof terrace on floor 1 over the restaurant area has never been furnished, there’s shuttering with what we assumed to be a bar and seating with wiring visible for outside lights in the future. Also above reception on floor 2 is an indoor space that’s not currently utilised. Having questioned this with reception on check out, there are no current plans to develop these areas for 2022.

We had booked bed & breakfast accommodation for our weekend break of 2 nights. On check in we had lunch at the Pool Bar (food served 12:00-16:00 and drinks 12:00-18:30), it was an interesting menu, we ordered a Poke Bowl and the Fish & Chips cone. Both meals arrived hot, were generous portions and nicely presented. We enjoyed a couple of hours reading our books. Breakfast (served 08:00 – 10:00) is service only via a QR menu. Freshly squeezed orange juice, water, tea and coffee is offered on arrival. The breakfast menu had a variety of cooked and continental options plus a sweet section. We tried the eggs Benedict and ham & cheese sandwich on our first morning. For our second breakfast I tried fried eggs, crispy bacon and mushrooms. Both days had been disappointing if I’m honest, the eggs Benedict was a cheese & ham salad poppy bagel with a poached egg and a dollop of hollandaise sauce on top. The bacon wasn’t crispy and neither back or streaky style, and the mushrooms were tinned. The waffle with syrup and a side of strawberries on the other hand was amazing! An interesting choice of breads, cakes & croissants are also offered with butter and jams. The croissants are highly recommended, they are very fresh and delicious. Dinner service (served 19:00 – 22:00) needs to be booked in advance by 17:00. We dined out both evenings and couldn’t access the QR with the evening menu during our stay to see what was available should we have dined in. We really missed having a bar area to have a pre or after dinner drink. What was previously the water feature in front of the restaurant has been drained and has a row of small tables and chairs outside.

Sadly the weather wasn’t in our favour to best enjoy the pool area. There were some guests relaxing around the pool during afternoons when the calima wind had warmed up and calmed down. There’s a selection of sun bed styles and a 2 x cabana beds right at the front of the hotel although we couldn’t work out why they were right on top of each other, so the second one looked at the back of the people in front, rather than with a view (we never saw this one used). The pool is an unusual shape with a low bridge to cross over. You can enter / exit by a variety of slope, steps or ladders, the water temperature was 24 degrees. It’s large enough to have a decent swim in, it’s standing depth throughout and a nice place to cool off and watch the world go by along the promenade.

We hadn’t notified the hotel in advance that we were celebrating a birthday during our stay, and they didn’t pick up on this during check in.

In summary this is a lovely spot to have a chilled adults only holiday in Playa Blanca. The proximity to Marina Rubicón is excellent, you have a plethora of restaurants to choose from within a short stroll around the corner. We like the boutique hotel size and received friendly service throughout. The wow factor is the position and sea views from all rooms. Not having a bar area open for the evenings is disappointing for those nights where you want to stay in rather than walk around to the marina. Some soft furnishings, such as cushions would improve the comfort in public seating areas. We would definitely stay here again for the boutique size of the hotel and adults only accommodation.
