We couldn’t believe it when this offer landed in our inbox, it’s similar to our USA road trip we’ve already planned for March / April 2018, although we follow Route 66 to cross America.
Depart Manchester on the 11th May 2018
Day 1: New York Arrival
Arrive in New York and make your own way to your hotel, where you will meet the tour director in the evening
Day 2: New York – Philadelphia – Washington
Depart from New York for Philadelphia to spend the morning exploring the historic district “City of Brotherly Love” and the birthplace of a nation. See the Liberty Bell and stroll through the Independence National Historik Park and Mall. Continuing on to the nation’s capital Washington D.C.
Day 3: Washington D.C.
Enjoy a city tour with highlights including the U.S. Capitol Building, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, the White House, Arlington National Cemetery and the JKF Memorial. Take the remainder of the day to visit one of the many museums or stroll the banks of the Potomac River.
Day 4: Washington D.C. – Gettysburg – Niagara Falls
Visit Gettysburg National Military Park, the site of a decisive battle in the American Civil War and the place where Abraham Lincoln gave his famous address in 1863. Travel through upstate New York to Buffalo and cross the international border into Canada for an overnight in Niagara Falls.
Day 5: Niagara Falls – The Great Lakes – Detroit
Spend the morning sightseeing at Niagara Falls. Stroll along Table Rock and view the Horseshoe Falls. Returning across the border to the USA late afternoon to stay in a suburb of Detroit, known as “Motor City USA”.
Day 6: Detroit – Chicago
An early start to visit the Henry Ford Museum, and Ford plant to watch a new vehicle roll off the factory floor. Travel along Lake Michigan to Chicago for an overnight stay.
Day 7: Chicago
Enjoy a short tour of the city’s highlights including Lake Shore Drive, the Magnificent Mile and Navy Pier. The remainder of the day at leisure.
Day 8: Chicago – Mississippi River Crossing – Sioux City
Travel through Midwest farm country with corn & wheat fields and dairy farms. Cross the mighty Mississippi River and into the state of Iowa for an overnight in Sioux City.
Day 9: Sioux City – Badlands – Mount Rushmore – Deadwood / Rapid City
Travel Westward through the grasslands of South Dakota and onwards to Badlands National Park, once home to buffalo and antelope, and filled with colourful rock formations. Continue on to the Black Hills, sacred to the Plains Indians and home to Mount Rushmore.
Day 10: Deadwood / Rapid City – Bighorn Mountains – Cody
Enter the state of Wyoming, which has twelve mountain ranges intermixed with deserts and rolling grasslands. Continue to Cody for an overnight. NB if an overnight in Cody is not possible due to weather conditions in Yellowstone, the overnight will be in Billings / Livingston, Montana.
Day 11: Cody – Yellowstone
Drive past the mountains in Wyoming to Yellowstone, America’s first National Park and enjoy a tour of this geothermal landscape including geysers, waterfalls, canyons and wildlife. Highlights include Yellowstone Lake, Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone Canyon’s majestic falls and the beautiful Hayden Valley.
Day 12: Yellowstone – Grand Teton – Salt Lake City
Travel through Grand Teton National Park (weather permitting) so see the mountain peaks towering over 13,000 ft. Visit the Snake River Outlook and try to capture the landscape made famous by Ansel Adam’s iconic shot. Later a short tour of Salt Lake City in Utah. The followers of Brigham Young built one of the best planned cities in the country. See the State Capital building, famed Temple Square and the Tabernacle.
Day 13: Salt Lake City – Bryce Canyon
Visit the spectacular Bryce Canyon with multi coloured sandstone spires and pinnacles. Enjoy a spectacular night sky filled with stars (weather permitting).
Day 14: Bryce Canyon – Lake Powell – Grand Canyon – Flagstaff
Travel to the stunning Lake Powell with crystal clear blue water contrasting red rock canyon walls. Lake Powell is the second largest man made lake in America, formed by damming the Colorado River. Visit the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the seven great natural wonders of the world. Overnight in Flagstaff on Route 66.
Day 15: Flagstaff – Seligman / Route 66 – Las Vegas
Head to the bright lights of Las Vegas from Flagstaff, passing through Seligman a town frozen in time sixty years ago on Route 66. Remainder of day at leisure in Las Vegas.
Day 16: Las Vegas – Mojave Desert – Beverly Hills – Los Angeles
Travel through the Mojave Desert from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, where Joshua trees dot the landscape. Tour of the “City of Angels” including Hollywood, Sunset Strip and Beverly Hills.
Day 17: Los Angeles
Optional full day tour to the world’s largest movie studio and theme park, Universal Studios.
Day 18: Los Angeles – Malibu – Santa Barbara – Central Coast
Travel north from Los Angeles through one of California’s favourite vacation spots, Santa Barbara which is famous for it’s mission and Spanish heritage. Stop at an iconic California lifeguard tower made famous in Baywatch.
Day 19: Central Coast – Carmel / Monterey – San Francisco
Visit Carmel the home of Clint Eastwood, and Monterey’s old Fisherman’s Wharf. Travel through the fertile valleys of Castroville and Santa Clara en route to San Francisco “City by the Bay”, where this tour ends on arrival at the final hotel.
