Food features high up on our priorities when we are travelling, so we wanted to share some local tips for foodies in Lanzarote.

We love the smaller, boutique style restaurants, those off the tourist beaten track with passionate chefs at the heart and soul of their businesses. We’ve selected some of our favourite places to dine at, across the island of Lanzarote.

Coentro
Situated on Calle Irlanda, 7 by the lighthouse in Playa Blanca, Coentro is a fabulous restaurant almost at the most Southern tip of Lanzarote. Brasilian chef, Joao Faraco was voted best chef in the Canary Islands during 2018. Coentro is his first restaurant on the island, offering tapas dishes or a tasting menu. The kitchen is open plan with tables or stools at the bar if you want to watch all the action. This place deserves a Michelin star!

El Risco
Restaurante El Risco has an envious position on the seafront in Caleta de Famara. The prime tables by the window have a stunning view of the Risco de Famara. You can’t sit this close to the sea and not eat fish! Chef, Juan Jesús Perdomo Acosta is one of the best on the island and has some amazing KM0 dishes to tempt you. There’s also a mural from artist César Manrique dedicated to local fisherman.

La Cabana
Advance booking is required for evening service at the fine dining restaurant La Cabana in Macher, on the outskirts of Puerto del Carmen. With a weekly menu, you can be sure of the freshest ingredients and flair from Chef Darren. Front of house is run by Debbie, it’s a winning team and has earned this couple the acclaim of being one of the top restaurants in Lanzarote.

La Maresía
Órzola is a harbour town on the tip of North Lanzarote, so there’s plenty of fresh fish restaurants to choose from. However, La Maresía is the place we head for. This restaurant is slightly away from the harbour on Calle la Quemadita, 18. The lack of view is more than made up for with great service and good food. We tend to head for a table in the garden at the side, they also have interior tables.

 

Our tip, try the scorpion fish (Cantarero) deep fried if available.

Majo Picón
Situated on Calle Miguel Lantigua, 18 in Tinajo, don’t be fooled by the unassuming exterior. This small restaurant has 4 tables / 16 covers at the rear. Plus stool seating in the bar area. Majo Picón is visible from the main road and in the centre of the town. Italian Chef, Federico Corazza fell in love with Lanzarote over a decade ago. They have a small menu with a choice of dishes priced from €4-€13 plus daily specials. Expect tapas with a twist and a warm welcome.

Nakai

Situated in an enviable position, Nakai can be found directly on the promenade with sea views from the terrace. This restaurant offers Asian fusion cuisine, and they have sushi, sashimi and Nigiri, as well as some more traditional fish and meat main courses and Entrepanes (between bread.)

 

Our tip, try the soft shell crab burger.

Sergio
OK, so this restaurant is in the middle of the Playa Blanca tourist resort, however we felt it was worthy of a mention. Situated on Calle Limones, the pedestrian street, Sergio overlooks the harbour of Playa Blanca. Chef, Riccardo is Italian, their menus are hand written. The dishes change weekly to according to chef’s inspiration and local produce. Their motto is a quote by Virginia Woolf “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well”.

Tacande
Situated in the plaza of Haría, the valley of a thousand palms. Tacande breaks the mould of the traditional restaurants in the North of Lanzarote. The decor is modern and stylish, with tables on the terrace or inside. The kitchen is open plan, so you can watch their chefs hard at work, and there’s a living wall. Tacande’s cuisine is a fusion of Asian, Peruvian and Morrocan dishes created with fresh local produce.
